ABOUT THIS ARTWORK

Despite the beauty of this mountain range, the Continental Divide, the main character that I chose for this painting is the collection of vibrant, red woody shrubs in the foreground. The shrubs are anchored in deep waves of pure white and blue snow. This bright white snow allows the red shrubs to shine in the spotlight. The snow is untouched except for the cutest little tracks of critters running in between, and leading you into, this colorful and awe-inspiring vegetation.

I took the photo that inspired this painting while cross country skiing at Snow Mountain Ranch in Colorado. This is my fourth watercolor of a winter landscape in this area. The YMCA of the Rockies at Snow Mountain Ranch has a large network of nordic ski trails in the mountain town of Granby. Granby is just 15 miles north of Winter Park, a popular downhill ski town and resort in Grand County. It’s also close to the small towns of Fraser and Tabernash.

The 360-degree views of the mountain ranges while skiing here absolutely stunning. The range you see here is actually the Continental Divide. If you look closely at the top of the mountains in this painting, left of center, you will see a large rock jutting out called “Devil’s Thumb”. This is the namesake for a neighboring nordic ski resort, and working cattle ranch, called Devil’s Thumb Ranch.
