The Legendary Palmer Lake Star on Sundance Mountain

Sundance Mountain, located in Palmer Lake, CO is the home of the largest lighted star in the world. The Palmer Lake star was built in 1935 during the Great Depression. It features 92 LED lights mounted on ten-foot metal poles. The Palmer Lake Fire Department currently maintains the star. The star lights up every evening during the month of December, on some holidays and special occasions to honor important people from our town. I painted this watercolor in spring (on the first weekend of June) outside (aka: ‘Plein Air’) from the pavilion by the town’s lake. I wanted to capture the breathtaking orange rocks contrasting with the light and dark greens on the mountainside.
