The Columbine Flower – State Flower of Colorado

The columbine is Colorado’s official state flower. It blooms during June and July and prefers to grow in the dry shade on the forest floor. This watercolor was inspired by a photo I took on a group trail run at the end of June. We were dropping down from “The Ridge” trail just north of Sundance Mountain west of Palmer Lake, CO in the Pike National Forest. Dozens of columbines were lighting up the dark and decaying forest floor with their contrasting white and violet petals. I wanted to showcase just one flower because each flower is so spectacular all by itself.
